Competitive Jump Rope

It is not just a playground activity – it is a competitive sport!

Jumping rope takes immense strength, endurance, focus, and patience, and can be much more than a schoolyard game of chanting rhymes. Competitive jump rope athletes train year-round. Our competitive program runs from September to May with optional events in the summer months.  Our team practices twice per week, 2 hours each practice.

Athletes will learn all the basics plus train for speed, endurance, power and continue to develop advanced skills and freestyle routines individually and in double dutch. The team competes all around Alberta and nationally. Our competitive team will attend workshops, perform for the public, and compete against each other throughout the year.

Commitment and dedication from the skippers is mandatory. This includes attending practices, practicing at home, and attending competitions. Parents will be asked to volunteer.

Competitive Jump Rope Team

Competitive rope skipping combines elements of aerobics, synchronized dance, gymnastics and breakdancing all tied together with jump ropes. These elements combine into a fast-paced crowd-pleasing exhibition and competitive sport.

Competitive jump ropers in Alberta will have several opportunities to compete. Typically, Rope Skipping Alberta will host three competitions within Alberta.  Open Competition (individual and team) are held early in the year (usually in February).  Provincial Championships are held in April.

Open Competition

Open Competition includes Masters and Teams Competition over two days.

Masters Competition includes speed and power events as well as a freestyle routine choreographed to music.  Masters means individual events. Team Competition athletes who compete in team events use single or double dutch ropes. In freestyle routines, jumpers have a set time limit to demonstrate a combination of skills in four categories – strength, athlete interactions, multiple unders, gymnastics/power, and rope manipulations. Routines are judged on difficulty and creativity criteria.  Teams are either 4 – 6 athletes of similar age.

Provincial Competition

Our Alberta Provincial Championships consists of a two day competition.

One day is Masters events and the second day is Teams events. You must compete in this competition if you want to qualify to go to Nationals.  The Provincial Champions are required in order to qualify to compete at the Canadian National Rope Skipping Championships.
